title.JPG (5153 bytes)Originally the company name was National Periodcal Publications but was changed in 1977 to simply DC. This was taken from the long running Superman stalwart  Detective Comics.

The first ever D.C. Comic was New Fun Comics Number 1 published in February 1935 but it wasn't until early 1960 that D.C. comics were first distributed in the UK. With the exception of a few romance and funny titles and the occasional super hero.

In the early days D.C's and Marvel comics often came over from the US as ballast for ships so many early issues show signs of water damage.

Other D.C. titles include: Action Comics
Detective Comics
Superman
Batman
Unknown Soldier
Sgt. Rock
Weird War
Weird Western Tales

Siegel and Shuster: This unassuming pair of creators actually started the great debate about rights and intellectual property - they had tried a similar idea a number of times in weeklies with 'samson' and 'coming of the supermen' along with a few others but superman was their last attempt and they were paid an absolute pittance for him, in the mid 80s they won a high court legal battle funded by the comic book writers of the time (thru their union) which forced DC to acknowledge their part in the creation of the character and pay them a fair share of the billions of dollars in profit (as they were virtually destitute in comparison) since then a lot of creators have kept their own projects back and published them as independent creator owned projects, this led to an increasing number of revivals and revamps of existing characters rather than new ones being created and has actually increased the lifespan of the most popular characters such as superman, batman annd marvel heroes as they span a number of generations - Tony Hutchison
