Postage, Packing & Delivery

One of the main points for consideration before opening a Shop on 26pigs is whether you are properly set up to run a mail-order business.

Without a doubt the most time consuming job we have is Postage and Packaging. From processing the order to packing it up, printing address labels and then shipping, all takes time.

Be prepared, have your packing materials ready. Having a reliable set of scales will save you a lot of time and effort. Otherwise you will find yourself going backwards and forwards to the Post Office.

Confirm postage rates for overseas orders and domestic for both courier and national post so you can be ready to quickly confirm the order and get the money in.

A word of warning: Just because your parcel is insured does not mean that the Post Office will pay what it is worth if it should get lost. Although we very rarely have problems with missing parcels, it does happen. You will only be paid out on the replacement cost of the items which is normally around half it's worth to you and that does not include the cost of originally posting the parcel.

Recorded delivery is fine until the Buyer denies receiving the item, which has happened. A signature for the parcel means nothing if the Buyer is contesting delivery.

We would suggest marking your items with an uninteresting sticker like 'Important Documents Inside' as this will put off anyone taking a fancy to your parcel. To some people, marking the parcel with 'Recorded Delivery' actually means 'Please take me, I am worth money!'.

Taking Payment

There are two payment methods you can accept on 26pigs:

  • Cheque or International Money Order
  • Credit Card Payments through PayPal or another web based credit card holding site.

Your customers can send payments by cheque or international money order/bankers draft (if outside the UK) but the problem with this method is the time it takes for you to receive the cheque and the time it takes the cheque to clear.

Alternatively you can ask your customers to pay you by Credit Card through the PayPal system. PayPal is simple and easy to use. For more information on PayPal see the next section.

PayPal.com - (You can also try NoChex.com the UK version.)

What is Pay Pal?

PayPal.com is an electronic payment service that allows you to send and receive money over the Internet by Credit Card payments.

How do I send money?

You can send money to anyone with an e-mail address with no extra charges to yourself.

  1. Go to www.paypal.com and click on the Send money
  2. Fill out the details including the recipients' e-mail address and the amount of money you're sending.
  3. If you have not registered as a PayPal user you'll need to do so.
  4. Fill out the credit card payment details as you would when purchasing anything on the Internet.
  5. The recipient will receive an e-mail from PayPal stating 'You've got Cash' with the title 'You have been paid £10.00 by Joe Bloggs'.
  6. The recipient can then follow the instructions on the e-mail to retrieve the money

How do I receive money?

Depending on whether you are going to be a Business User (receiving over $100 per month) or a Private User you should register with PayPal.

For Business Users you will need to enter in your credit card details as a guarantee that you will not abuse the system. By entering your credit card details, Pay Pal will add Trusted Account to your account details on PayPal. This is so that people dealing with you can feel happy about sending you money.

When you enter in your credit card details for Business User registration, PayPal will test your credit account by debiting $1.00. You will receive this money back.

You can receive money in the following way:

  1. Register on www.PayPal.com
  2. When you register on 26pigs as a Seller or Shop you will be asked for your preferred methods of payment. If you want to accept payment using the PayPal service then write this into the box along with any other payment method you are happy accepting (eg. cheque).
On registering you will be asked for your bank account details. This is so that PayPal can pay the money you have been sent into your account.
  3. When a Buyer on 26pigs adds an item you are selling to their basket (or wins an item you have up for auction) they will be informed that along with your other preferred payment methods you also accept PayPal.
  4. On confirmation of the total cost of the item including Postage and Packing the Buyer can then visit the PayPal site and fill in the required details including your e-mail address and pay, by credit card, into your PayPal account.
  5. You will receive an e-mail from PayPal stating 'You've got cash' along with the title, 'You have been paid £10.00 by John Bloggs'.
  6. Depending on how you requested to be paid the money (when you originally registered) the money can be either 'swept' into your bank account every 24 hours, held in your PayPal account until you decide what to do with it or ask it to be paid to someone else.

Purchases Pending and Sales History

Once payment has been received and the order despatched the next step is to Complete the order. This is carried out in Purchases Pending which you can link to from My26pigs.

Completing the order removes the sold items from the 26pigs database and also activates the Grading process, so that when the Buyer next visits 26pigs, they will be asked to grade the buying experience. The comments given will then become part of your Sellers Details so that other buyers can view them when deciding whether or not to purchase from you.

This is the order from the example we have been using above. All orders from the current month are shown on the Purchases Pending page. As you can see this order has not yet been processed due to it's 'Pending' status.

The Delete function is only to be used when the order has been duplicated (i.e. the Buyer has double-clicked the Submit button when placing an order). This is because all ordered items must be processed in some way otherwise the 'Deleted' items will stay 'Pending' and will not be able to be purchased by another buyer. More on this below.

Order# Buyer ID Amount Status Date Remove
1216 JoeBloggs 14.00 Pending 22/01/2002 Delete

By clicking on the 'Order#' you can view and process the order. Our example 'Order Details' page will look like this:

26pigs > Order 1216 > Joe Bloggs (JoeBloggs) > 22/01/2002
This order is currently pending.

By finalising this order you are activating 3 features. The grading link in the Buyers My26pigs will be shown so that you can get your grading (which will help you to increase your sales). All items that you remove from here will also be removed from the Store and the Buyers Basket. The items that have been sold will be added to your monthly invoice.

PID Title: Quantity: Price: Select:

    Total Cost ex. P+P: £ 14.00
Purchase Completed Remove All Sold Items
Remove All Selected Items
Put Back Selected Un-Sold Items
Cancel Order

As you can see there are 4 options open to you to process this order.

  • Purchase Completed Remove All Sold Items: - All items have been sold so you want to delete them from the database.
  • Remove All Selected Items: - The Buyer has changed their mind and only wants 4 of the 5 items so remove from the database the selected items.
  • Put Back Selected Un-Sold Items: - With the Buyer changing their mind we need to remove the 'Pending' tag on the un-sold item so that it is available for someone else to purchase it.
  • Cancel Order: - The Buyer did not get in touch or send payment within the allotted time frame so we need to remove the Pending tags from all the items and close the order.

Depending on how you closed the order, the Status in the Purchases Pending list will have now changed from 'Pending' to either 'Completed' or 'Cancelled'.

Remember a 'Cancelled' order will remove all 'Pending' tags where as a 'Deleted' order is only to be used when an order has been duplicated as this will not remove 'Pending' tags.

At the bottom of the purchases pending page you will find your Sales History. By clicking on a month you will be able to view all your previous orders for that month.

Editing or Deleting Items by Hand

There may be times when you will need to delete items that you have sold 'off-site', for example you may have your own web site, a shop or a market stall as another out-let for your stock.

To delete or edit items by hand you can access the whole of your stock from My26pigs > My Shop.

Our Charges

It's not a catch, it's what we think is a fair charge to use our service to enable us all to make some money.

26pigs charge you 5% on your gross sales (not including postage). So when you sell £200's worth of stock, we will bill you £10.00

We keep a tally on what you have sold through the Purchases Pending system and will send you a monthly up-date. You only pay when the amount you owe is £10.00 or more. If the amount for the month is under £10.00 then it is carried over to the following month and so on until the £10.00 owing is reached.

So hopefully after reading all that you have decided to host your items on 26pigs.com and will allow us to help you make some money and have a very enjoyable time doing it.

If you require any further assistance we are on hand to help at anytime and would be very glad to do so.

Happy Selling.
