'Shoot' started on 16/8/69 and became monthly in May 2000. It merged with 'Goal', 'Football Star' and 'Top Soccer' during it's long run. - R.Hosie

If you were a boy growing up in the 1970s and into football then Shoot! was pretty much unmissable. It was certainly a progression from the comic strip based brilliance of Scorcher and Score and later Tiger and Scorcher and, when reading it, I always felt as though I wasn't old enough to be doing so but - one day, suddenly - I felt too old to be reading it. My favourite item was undoubtedly the hilarious 'Focus On' section where a player of the day was asked a wonderfully-anodyne set of questions including the obligatory 'Miscellaneous likes and dislikes,' 'Best Friend,' 'Favourite Food,' and 'Who Would You Most Like to Meet.' When I was reading Shoot, the answers were nearly always the same. Favourite food was invariably 'Steak and Chips,' favourite drink was 'Lager.' Best friend was usually 'My wife.' Miscellaneous Dislikes usually cited 'shaving' and 'travelling home after an away defeat.' The most consensual answer however had to be 'Who Would You Most Like to Meet.' In the mid-70s, this was nearly always Muhammad Ali. One thing sticks in my mind after all these years. When asked what their favourite music was, an alarming number of players said 'The Eagles' or, later 'ELO.' However, for some reason, I always recall a Stoke City defender called Alan Dodd saying 'Wishbone Ash' was his favourite group. Bizarre! - Matt

How can anyone think about Shoot and not re-call the fantastic League Ladders given away at the start of every season. A little cardboard tab with the team name printed in the appropriate colours, that you moved up and down the slots in the "wall chart". Every Sunday i would religiously complete the task, and my love of "Alloa" stems purely from the little black and orange tab! - Steve Bailey
