Regarding whizzer and chips comic, I think it first came out in 1969 and continued to be published until its merger with Buster in 1990. - Curtin Lorcan

Whizzer and Chips was a great innovation of its time. It truly seemed like "two comics in one" because its rivals, Beano and Dandy were then both 16 page comics for 4d (1 1/2p in today's money). No other humour comic of the period had more than 24 pages. Whizzer and Chips launched at 32 pages for 6d (2 1/2p), so it really did seem like two 16 page comics at 3d each. A bargain!

The success of Whizzer and Chips encouraged IPC (the publishers) to try the format again with Shiver and Shake, and the football weekly Score 'n' Roar. Neither lasted long, proving that originals prosper, but imitations fail; an adage publishers often forget. - Lew Stringer

A key innovation with W&C was the Where's Wally?-esque game where Shiner infiltrated the Whizzer section and Sid/Slippy hid somewhere in the Chips bit. Looking back, Whizzer was the slightly more upmarket, middle-class section (icon - pampered, well-dressed kid with an exotic pet), while Chips was a bit more down and dirty (icon - roughneck type who always found a way to get a black eye). I dunno. Comic sociologists, discuss... - Andrew Lowe

Probably the best children's comic ever produced. It was Terry Bave who started spot the Whizz Kid/Chip-ite raider. In issue number two the Shadow from Me and My Shadow made a cameo appearance in Ginger's Tum. This rivalry between the two comics reached its peak when the Chip-ites stole an entire page (the Odd Ball strip) from Whizzer. Whizzer and Chips merged with Buster in 1990. - Clive Huggett
